Spina Bifida prophylactic surgery gives  22 months old a new lease of life

A 22 months old infant, a resident at JNPT, Raigad suffered from a rare spinal deformity commonly known as Spina Bifida since he was of 28 weeks in the womb. He underwent a very rare and a successful Spina Bifida (Split cord malformation) surgery in Fortis Hiranandani Hospital at Vashi by an eminent neurosurgeon. Spina Bifida is a congenital disorder whereby the spine and the spinal cord develop in an abnormal fashion. This deformity can be rectified by performing a surgery wherein the spinal cord is detethered by releasing its low attachment (thereby nullifying the bow string effect) and excising the cartilaginous septum which divides the spinal cord. Effectively allowing the spinal cord to move freely in the spinal canal.

A large number of elderly people all over the world today, suffer from this condition. Patients have to undergo Total Knee Replacement for severe arthritis where the worn out cartilage is removed from the knee joint, and a metal prosthetic is implanted. This surgery stands as an example that successful knee replacement is possible at any age and the leg movement is regained as before with minimum restriction.
