Reserve Bank of India had around 24 governors. In this list, the shortest serving governor was Amitav Ghosh. He was an Indian banker, who served for 15 days (in 1985). He was the 16th governor of the Reserve Bank of India and was the Deputy Governor of the Bank since 1982. He was earlier the chairman of Allahabad Bank.

Next was B N Adarkar who served for 42 days in the year 1970. He was a professional economist and served for many years in the office of the Economic Adviser of the Government of India and also held important positions in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

In the year 1957, K G Ambegaokar, a member of the Indian Civil Service, served as a governor for 45 days. He served as Finance Secretary prior to his appointment as Deputy Governor. For 92 days, N C Sen Gupta was appointed as the 11th governor of RBI. Prior to his appointment as the Governor, he was working as Secretary to the Department of Banking of the Ministry of Finance.

Ghosh, Adarkar, Ambegaokar and N C Sen Gupta served as interim governors (before next governor was selected), that explains their short stint. As per the list of top 10 governors who served the shortest tenure, while Urjit Patel would be ninth in the list (with tenure of 2 years and 97days); former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh would be the tenth in this list (with a tenure of 2 years and 120 days).
