Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said India would lead the world in transportation sector, with electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage devices set to play a leading role in the segment. “India will lead the energy revolution in the world with electric vehicles,” said Finance Minister Piyush Goyal while presenting the Budget 2019 in Lok Sabha today in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
A day ahead of the budget 2019, the government lowered customs duty on import of parts and components of such vehicles to 10 to 15 per cent to promote domestic assembling of electric vehicles. Further, the CBIC has removed customs duty exemptions to battery packs for electric vehicles and doubled the duty on battery packs for mobile phones. The new rates of duties have already been implemented from 30th January 2019.
Currently, the cost of petrol and electric two-wheelers is the same which is around Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. That is mainly because of the parts used in electric two-wheeler are imported. But with the green cess scheme in place, the gap can be reduced and the manufacturers can ask component makers to invest and start manufacturing parts locally to keep the costs down.
