New Delhi : The Government may refuse to swap the scrapped notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 left with public, resisting the Supreme Court’s Tuesday order to open a window for allowing those who could not exchange or deposit them by December 30.

Though the Solicitor General agreed to review the genuineness of each case where people are still left with the scrapped notes, the government may offer relief only to the petitioners before the Court if it rules their genuineness.

A thinking in the finance ministry is that the very purpose of the demonetisation will be difficult if a window is opened for all to get their old notes changed.  The Centre will convey its reservations to the Apex Court at the next hearing fixed on July 18 by the Court while asking it and the RBI to consider a window for exchange of the scrapped notes to those who had genuine difficulty.
