New Delhi: The government has stopped the classification of steel producers as integrated, primary, and secondary to give a level-playing field to large, small and medium steel companies with different capacities and following different routes of production. “No distinction shall be made on account of the basic input material and the process followed,” the steel ministry said in a press release.

Steel is produced mainly through two routes; the basic oxygen furnace route used by the primary players, and the electric arc furnace route used by secondary steel players. Steel minister Birender Singh had earlier said small steel players also contribute to the country’s steel output, adding that they will also play an important role in achieving the 300 mln tn production target by 2030-31 (Apr-Mar) set by the ministry.
