Fire accident at Reliance Industries, 8 injured

A major fire broke out at refinery site of Reliance Industries in Jamnagar, Gujarat. As a result of the fire eight workers have suffered burn injuries and were rushed to state government-run GG Hospital in Jamnagar city.

Production at this site had not been affected as the unit was under planned shutdown for maintenance. The fire broke out early morning at the company’s fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), a gasoline-making unit, at the 660,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery.

Reliance  Industries had on 18 October said that it was planning a five-week maintenance and inspection shutdown of the fluidised catalytic cracking unit  of the domestic tariff area refinery at its 60-mtpa refining complex in  Jamnagar.

In the a statement earlier today, the company said, “There was an unfortunate flash fire in one of the units under a planned maintenance shutdown in our DTA (Domestic Tariff Area) refinery at Jamnagar. While the Reliance fire brigade extinguished the fire swiftly, this has resulted in injuries to some contract workers, who are being provided necessary medical treatment. All operations of the refinery continue to be normal.”

The domestic tariff area (DTA) of the refinery site where the fire broke out. The second 540,000 bpd refinery is located in the special economic zone of the refinery site.

As of 1400 hrs, The stock was down 1.5 per cent at Rs 992.
