NEW DELHI :  Paving the way for field trials of genetically modified crops, Environment Minister M Veerrappa Moily approved a decision of the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee to allow trials for such crops “subject to certain approvals.”

Moily has approved the decision of the GEAC–the regulatory body for genetically engineered crops–to allow trials for genetically modified crops after requisite approvals from the committee and state governments.

The move by Moily is a shift from the stand of his predecessor Jayanthi Natarajan, who had refused to approve the decision of the committee saying the issue was pending in the Supreme Court.
