BHOPAL : Five organisations of gas victims, at a press conference here on Monday, sought to know from the Department of Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation as to whether the hazardous waste of the Union Carbide factory was being secretly transported and disposed of at Pithampur.
At a press conference here on Monday, they expressed regret that instead of focussing on the scientific assessment of the contaminated area around the factory, the central and state governments were taking thoughtless actions. The organisations charged the Department with violating the directions of the Supreme Court regarding the disposal of the waste and endangering the lives of residents of Pithampur.
Rasheeda Bee, President of Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh said that in 2010, the then environment minister had objected to the disposal of Union Carbide waste in Pithampur stating that this would contaminate the Yashwant Sagar reservoir, which is the source of drinking water supply to Indore.
