BHOPAL: The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, deferred hearing on petitions regarding reservation in promotions to November 23. The state government had sought time to submit its reply from the bench of Justices Chelameshwar and Abhay Manohar Sapre.
On 30 April this year, the Jabalpur High Court, declaring reservation in promotions as unconstitutional and thus null and void, had struck down the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Rules, 2002 under which the reservations were provided.
It had also ordered that all who were promoted under the rules be reverted. An appeal was filed against this decision in the Supreme Court by the state government.
A petition was also filed by SAPAKS (Samanya Varg Adhikari Karmachari Sangh) in the SC, seeking directives to the state government to follow High Court’s order. The employees are waiting for the Supreme Court’s judgment in the matter.
The Supreme Court has put a ban on promotions in the state, pending judgment on the two petitions, following which thousands of employees have retired without getting promotions.
