Autopsy reports pick holes in SIMI ‘encounter’ story

BHOPAL: The autopsy reports of the SIMI operatives who were killed in an encounter with the police on Monday, have revealed multiple entry and exit wounds on the bodies of the deceased and also that majority of the wounds were on the torso (chest). Doubts emerged over the  police claims that the SIMI suspects were killed in a gunfight after a video showed an armed police commando pumping bullets into what appeared to be a nearly-dead fugitive.

As per the sources in the Gandhi Medical College, Medico legal department, autopsy reports revealed that the men died from gunshot wounds mostly in the abdomen and the chest. Most of the bullets were fired into the chest and the abdomen of the fugitive SIMI suspects. Some shots pierced through them while some remained lodged inside. A bullet also hit the head of one of the men. Several questions were raised by the opposition parties on Tuesday against the police alleging that standard procedures were not followed in apprehending the terror suspects.

Standard operating procedures in encounter cases usually require police to shoot to disable and not kill.  The clothes of the slain SIMI suspects killed in the encounter have been sent for forensic test. Police claimed they surrounded the escaped prisoners in a hilly area near Eitkheri village and were fired at when they tried to capture the SIMI suspects.

NIA declines probe request; DGP says we had ‘only informed’ it

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced that the incident of jailbreak by SIMI under-trials would be probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) but there is little possibility of NIA entering the scene. Sources said NIA has refused to probe the incident as such incidents are never investigated by it. NIA neither investigates jail breaks nor encounters.

According to sources, the state government, after verbal refusal by the NIA, is not sending any formal letter to it. DGP Rishi Shukla said NIA has been given complete details of the incident and nothing else. As far as the NIA is concerned, it investigates matters related to terrorism. Sources said an NIA team may come to quiz SIMI under-trials in the jail to know the intentions of the eight SIMI under-trials who escaped but it has nothing to do with how they escaped from the jail and how were they killed in an encounter.

Home minister Bhupendra Singh too on Tuesday had said that NIA will investigate the jailbreak. Chief Minister had also said that NIA investigation has been discussed with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.     A senior officer maintains that former DGP Nandan Dubey will investigate into lapses leading led to jailbreak.
