Will complete 11 years in office on November 29
BHOPAL : Two days from now, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will become country’s seventh and the first chief minister of the state to hold the top office consecutively for 11 years. Prior to Chouhan, former chief minister Digvijay Singh was the longest-serving chief minister of the state having completed ten years in office at a stretch.
Those chief ministers who held the office without a break longer than Shivraj include Narendra Modi, Jyoti Basu, Bidhan Chandra Roy, Navin Patnaik, Sheela Dixit and Raman Singh. Patnaik and Singh are still chief ministers. Patnaik is chief minister of Odisha for 16 years while Raman Singh is chief minister of Chattisgarh for 13 years consecutively. Jyoti Basu is the longest-serving chief minister, who was CM of West Bengal for 23 years. Sheela Dixit was CM of Delhi for 15 years, Modi was CM of Gujarat for 12 years and 4 months whereas Bidhan Chandra Roy was the chief minister of West Bengal for 12 years. Prakash Singh Badal in Punjab and Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu have also served as chief minister for 11 years but with breaks.
Earlier, Chouhan has scripted a record by winning elections for the third time consecutively in the state, becoming the longest serving CM of BJP in the state and also breaking the record of Digvijay Singh of completing 10 years in power.
