Octogenarian classical vocalist holds audience in thrall

BHOPAL : Magical performance of ace classical vocalist Siddhram Swami Korwar and noted harmonium player Vivek Bansod left the audience spellbound at Ravindra Bhawan on Saturday at a concert ‘Shastriya Sahitya Sabha’. It was organised by Naad Chaitanya Samiti, Bhopal.

The programme began with melodious performance of harmonium and Pipe organ player Vivek Bansod who hails from Ujjain. He started off with rag maru vihag in vilambit ek taal on pipe harmonium. In the same rag, a gat in teen taal and Banarasi tune presented by him enchanted the music lovers.

It was followed with 22 shruti (notes) harmonium and piddle harmonium or pipe organ. He presented rag kirwani and a small tune on 22 shruti (notes) harmonium as well as songs of some Marathi play’s song and light music was presented on pipe organ, enchanted the audience. It is noteworthy here that Bansod is only player who plays harmonium in 22 notes instead of 12.

“Generally musicians played harmonium on 12 notes due to influence of western music but I play 22 notes which is based on Bharatmuni’s Natyashastra. My one book ’22 Shruti’ published recently. Music is nothing but science only,” said Bansod who is director of Mahakal Institute Technology, Ujjain. Jayant Koranne accompanied him on tabla and Jitendra Sharma on harmonium.

The programme concluded with magical performance of 81-year-old renowned vocalist Siddhram Swami Korwar.  He began with bada khyal ‘dhund ban saiyan…,’ in vilambit ek taal. It was based on raag ‘nand’ which is known as one of the toughest evening raags which is rare to be use now. Earlier, it was used to present in Maharashtra and Karnataka. In the same raag, a chhota khyal ‘ ajhu na aaye more shyam…,’ rendered by his self composed song ‘vichrat gopal Krishna …,’ and ‘tarana’ , It was in drut ek and teen taal. He ended his performance with khyal thumri ‘kal nahi aaye sawre bin…,’ won the hearts of music lovers.  He was accompanied by Pt. Kiran Deshpande on tabla, Jitendra Pandy on harmonium and Akshay Dwivedi on tanpura.

Talking to media persons, well-known vocalist Korbar said, “I dedicated my whole life to music only and that’s why I left home till 12 years for taking training in music from my guru music maestro Dr. Puttaraj Gawai. He was institute himself and to bring this institute, I decided to live and work in Bhopal and to open a music institute on the name of my guru.”

Speaking about quantity and quality of concert at present time, the ace vocalist said, ‘No doubt the quantity of concert has been increased but its quality became low. And it happened due to lack of guru-shishya parampra and arrival of net. Nowadays, youth are recording and copying the music with the help of mobile. They are not creating new thing rather copying.”
