BHOPAL: The National Green Tribunal (NGT), on Tuesday, has instructed state government to give an assessment the losses due to illegal sand mining. Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) have also been instructed to file affidavits over illegal mining and losses being incurred due to it. NGT has banned mining till October 31 in Madhya Pradesh. NBA leader Medha Patkar, who appeared before NGT informed it that due to illegal mining incurring huge loss to state exchequer. If NGT waits for the new law to be formulated by the central government to check illegal mining, it will be too late. NBA leader Patkar, while taking to Free Press, said, “No initiative has been taken to check illegal mining in the state. Illegal mining is being carried on at Narmada and its tributaries unabated. And it will be too late till central government formulates new policies and law regarding illegal mining.” Patkar alleged NVDA to acquire Sardar Sarovar Dam land which are affecting directly to 10 villages. She said that the lawyers who appeared on the behalf of the state government tried to convince the NGT that central government was drafting a new law to check illegal mining but I told NGT that till then it will be too late.”
