Music is pure mathematics: Gundecha brothers

BHOPAL : The three-day ‘Ganitotsav-2015’ concluded with a lecture and cultural performances including puppet show, dhrupad recital, Bharatnatyam and Odissi dances here on Tuesday at the Ravindra Bhawan Auditorium.

It was organised by St. Joesph’s Convent Senior Secondary School, Idgah Hills, Bhopal. It objective was to provide an open platform to students and teachers to rediscover and reinvent Mathematics.

The evening session of the programme began with a puppet show, which talked about the importance of mathematics in our life as well as in education. This was followed by performances of Bharatnatyam and Odissi dances. Presented by Natyshree Group, Bhopal, Bharatnatyam began with Durga Stuti ‘Sarv Mangal Manglaye…,’ which depicted the nine forms of goddess Durga. They concluded their performance with ‘Tillana or Tarana’. It was based on Raagmalika in Aadi Taal. The ten incarnation of Lord Vishnu were presented under an item ‘Dashavataram’. It was presented by Odissi dancer Madhurima Viswas.

The programme concluded with a ‘Music and Mathematics’ session with renowned Dhrupad singers Padmshree Gundecha Brothers. They began their performance with aalap and a song ‘Tu Hi Surya Tu Hi Chandra…,’ . It was based on Raag Bhopali in Chautaal. They also presented Ganesh Stuti ‘Sanker Sut’. Gundecha brothers also explained that how music is linked with mathematics through their performance.

Speaking about mathematics and music, they said that “Music is pure mathematics. The structure of both is same but music has an emotional content, which changes from performance to performance. The principle of Mathematical permutation and combination is called ‘Merukhand’ in classical music. And every classical singer should have knowledge of ‘Merukhand'”.

Speaking about Taal and Tihai,, they said, “Taal and Tihai are also based on pure mathematics. It has various kind and use including Chatasthra, Tristra, Mishra, Khand, Sankirn which represents here 4, 3, 7, 5 and 9 respectively. To say same thing three times equally called Tihai. It is best example of time management.”

Lecture of well-known mathematicians Vinay Nair and Veena Raizada were also held in the morning session.
