BHOPAL : Police used force to drive out the picketing school teachers from Yadgar-e-Shahjahani Park on Thursday afternoon. Many of the agitating teachers sustained injuries as police pelted lathis on them. Some of them are undergoing treatment at the Hamidia Hospital. Police have arrested nearly 400 teachers.

For the last five days, the school teachers, under the banner of “Azad Adhyapak Sangh” were picketing in support of their demands, including implementation of Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and the merger of their services with the School Education Department.

The agitating teachers had declared that they would not budge till their demands were met. But no one even approached them for talks.

The Sangh president Bharat Patel said, “Police forced us to leave the ground.

They arrested many of us and a large number of teachers were injured in the lathi charge. Police has driven us out from the park but 20,000 teachers are still in the city. We will hold a meeting to chalk out our next course of action and soon we will make our strategy public.”

Patel said, “Teachers are governed by three departments – School Education, Urban Development and Administration and Panchayats. We demand merger of the services of all teachers into the school education department. The second demand is Sixth Pay Commission benefits wef 2006 with arrears. CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan has done a lot for the school teachers but still four lakh teachers are deprived of these benefits.”

As per the Tallaiya police, nearly 400 teachers were arrested. Police drove out the teachers as despite having permission for only two days, they were picketing for the last five days. So, the administration had no other option but to drive them out.”

ADM BS Jamod said, “Teachers were given permission for three days but they stayed there for five days. For the last two days, they agitation was illegal so we had to take action. There was no lathi-charge. Three hundred and twenty-five men and 63 women were arrested.”

Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha Satyadev Katare and Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia have condemned the lathi-charge on school teachers. Katare had visited Yadgar-e-Shahjahani Park to meet with teachers.
