BIGGER CROWD GATHERS AT RATANGARH ON ‘DOOJ’ THAN ‘NAVMI

BHOPAL: The newly- appointed administrative and police team in Datia has a challenge awaiting it as a bigger crowd gathers at Ratangarh temple – where a stampede killed more than 120 persons on Durga Navmi on Sunday – on Dooj, the second day of Diwali.

Nearly 5 lakh devotees had assembled on Navmi- last day of Navratri festival. Stampede claimed around 200 lives according to unofficial estimates, and left many more injured. Administration was put in the dock on the ground of negligence as it had deployed only 30 policemen to control the mob. Administration was blamed for not taking the situation seriously.

Newly- appointed Collector M R Raghuraj and SP R K Marathe assumed the charge on Tuesday and they held the meeting to review the situation. The administration also chalked out the strategy to handle the situation in future. They also visited the spot where stampede had occurred.

SP RK Marathe said, ” We will make elaborate arrangements to handle the situation on Bhai- Dooj as devotees visit the temple in large number. The number of devotees is far more than on Navmi”. ” We held the meeting with officials and accessed the situation.

We tried to find out the reasons and cause which were responsible for the tragedy. So that administration would be more alert to manage the situation the next time,” he added.
