BHOPAL: Cops beating citizens over petty issues are common sights everywhere in India. But in Bhopal, three constables thrashed a superintendent of police (radio) when he was returning home with his family on Sunday night. The incident occurred at the Depot Square around 11:45 pm.
The accused even hurled abuses at the SP and his wife who was accompanying him.
The policemen were returning from a feast and were allegedly drunk. They failed to identify the officer as he was not in uniform.
The senior police officials took cognizance of the incident and ordered suspension of three personnel on Monday. One of the accused cops was earlier suspended from the crime branch for his involvement in flesh trade.
The SP, BM Shakya, was heading towards Bhadbhada from New Market side via Depot Square with his family in a four-wheeler.
In wake of Sunday lockdown and the night curfew, cops had barricaded the roads on Depot Square. In order to make his way through the barricaded road, the SP came out of his car to shift some of the barricades.
As Shakya was trying to shift barricades manually, the constables arrived in their car from the front. Their rashly driven car hit Shakya. The SP, telling the car occupants to be careful, asked them to give him space to move. This led to a brawl and the accused assaulted Shakya.
Shakya in his complaint said that when his wife tried to intervene, the accused even pushed her on the other side.
Talking to Free Press, the SP said that the cops were drunk and even hurled abuses at him and his wife.
Shakya then informed police and the three constables were later summoned by the senior officers. The cops apologised for their act, however, the officer was adamant on an FIR.
The TT Nagar police have booked the accused Vinod Parashar, Anil Jaat and Abhishek Chaudhary under Sections 279, 323, 294 and 506 of the IPC.
Parashar is a Special Armed Forces (SAF) personnel, while Chaudhary was posted in the traffic department. Anil Jaat was posted to the crime branch but was suspended for his involvement in flesh trade.
Inquiry ordered into incident: ADG
Department has ordered an inquiry into the incident and the three cops are placed under suspension, said Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Bhopal, A Sai Manohar. It has come to fore that the cops were drunk at the time of incident, their medical examination was also conducted, said the ADG.
