The once in a 5-year spectacle is back. Thanks to a vigilant Election commission, one of the handful untouched independent institutions of our great country, our cities are saved from the larger- than -life size posters, littered across the country, claiming to give us the moon.

And after this spectacle is over what awaits us is the monotony of our lives and the geometric economic progress of the hard to reach, not to be seen elected new-elites. Suddenly, I am reminded of the cartoons of RK Laxman and his common man caricatures which would capture this state of affairs beautifully.

A quiet election gives us the time and space to step back think and reflect upon the past and vote for a better future of our country , which has its unique challenges and opportunities given our diverse social and cultural background.
Our great Constitution gives every citizen equal right.

My expectation from the government at the very least is to provide an environment which helps every citizen to flourish and exploit their potential in a fearless and equal opportunity environment. Discipline and rule of law should apply to all. An unbiased and speedy judicial recourse and a police system which gives comfort and security to an average citizen is the crying need of the hour.

Today, the reality is that a large part of Indian population is economically backward, plutocracy prevails more than ever before. Indian agriculture on which we are heavily dependent for produce and employment,is far behind in productivitycompared to other agricultural countries. India needs to create 50 lakh new jobs annually to give equal opportunity to fresh graduates. Our natural resources are over exploited and badly abused.

Some steps need to be taken in the direction of…

A framework that provides well for the Indian entrepreneurial ability to flourish, grow and create more jobs and an equal and happy society

These are some basic hygiene factors not a  comprehensive list
The question I have been wondering is how do I exercise my democratic right. What are the choices? Who do I vote for? At the end of the day, we deserve the government we get.

In the past decades after independence we have seen governments with absolute majorities of various parties and also some coalition governments. The latter seem to fare quite well when compared to the former. Even if they were short lived or short stints of fragile coalitions. These coalitions have delivered, their policies have had far reaching impact and set the economic direction on a long-term growth path. The reasons for this I cannot comprehend, but seems the tussle helps bring out the best.

Further, there are numerous examples of exemplary work irrespective of the political environment. We are proud to have excelled in our infrastructure, though a lot more needs to be done but great examples are our metros, big-city airports and immigration, clean city of Indore, Delhi government schools delivering quality education and laudable results.Given a conducive environment we could have many more such stories.

So, what should we do in the impending elections? VOTE FOR MERIT. Vote for the most deserving candidate, irrespective of party. Our decision for merit over party preference will help send deserving candidates to the apex decision making body of our democracy and a chance for a collective brainstorming which fixes the framework for a long term development and not a short term win.
