Bhopal: The BJP and Congress are propagating their views on social media to woo voters. They are also adopting the latest available means but at individual level most of the politicians in MP are still in the process of adopting to new age-media.  Though most politicians claim to be media-savvy, their records show they are poor in social media management. Most netas depend on Facebook while some are also present on Twitter but most of them depend on WhatsApp for connecting with people.

There are very few MLAs and ministers who have mobile applications in their names. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Vishvas Sarang are few among them. Netas could also be considered backward in terms of developing websites on their names. Team of chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has made himself available on almost all popular platforms, though Shivraj claims that he never uses a mobile phone. Chouhan is available on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. He is also present on Sharechat – a social media platform less popular in India. Moreover, he has a website and a mobile app too, to connect with people.

Leader of Opposition, Ajay Singh takes help of Twitter and Facebook to connect with people and spread his word. Singh also has a website developed in his name.  Following Shivraj’s steps, his minister Vishvas Sarang too has a mobile application developed in his names to connect with the masses. He also owns a website besides his presence on other popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Cabinet minister Narottam Mishra who also had charge of public relations depends only on Facebook and Twitter.  Cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Jayant Malaiya also depends on Facebook and Twitter to convey his thoughts and connect with his voters. He also has an account on Instagram.

Aam Admi Party that is considered to be tech-savvy and gives a stiff competition to the BJP as far as social media is concerned fails to give a neta who is well represented on social media in Madhya Pradesh. Its state president Alok Agarwal who is also contesting is present only on Facebook and Twitter.

Not a single complaint for violation of social media norms

Not a single complaint has been filed for violation of social media norms with election commission, till date. Election commission had issued guidelines and had prohibited use of social media for campaigning between 10pm to 6 am. Moreover messages of hate and communally sensitive nature are prohibited completely.

Surprisingly, the message of election commission hasn’t reached far flung areas properly. People in rural areas are still ignorant about election commission guidelines and posting messages that violate EC guidelines.  Most of the political parties cleverly use such messages in their comments box. They also keep their timelines open so that individuals tag them in their post and their purpose is served by others.

More surprising part is lack of awareness among the field staff engaged in election duty in areas far from main cities. An officer requesting anonymity said that he has conducted training of government official and employees but most of them were unaware about social media norms for campaign. These facts were corroborated when a senior official from election commission confirmed that no complaint has been filed till date for violation of social media norms related to campaigning for assembly election.
