We all are aware of Gunmaster G9 and Quick Gun MuruGun. If these flicks have etched a mark in our minds… the cold blooded monologue, “Kitne goli hain…” will also go down the memory lane. If you thought all these are limited to Bollywood… sample this… Politicians in the assembly poll-bound Madhya Pradesh seem to be having a penchant for guns – among them top ministers of Shivraj Singh Chouhan government as well as senior leaders of the opposition Congress.

According to the affidavits submitted by candidates along with nomination papers for the November 28 polls in the state, both rifles and revolvers seem to be the pride possession of several politician, including 12 current ministers, who already enjoy official security.

Around 38 per cent of present ministers of the 32-strong Shivraj Singh Chouhan government, who have been fielded again in the polls by the BJP, have declared in their affidavits to be having licensed pistols, shotguns, revolvers and rifles. The list of the 12 ministers owning guns, includes Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan himself, besides six other cabinet ministers and five ministers of state. The CM in his affidavit has submitted to be having a revolver worth Rs 5,500.

The cabinet ministers who have declared to be owning guns, include school education minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, who is a contesting again from Harsud seat of Khandwa district, agriculture minister Gourishankar Bisen (Balaghat), PWD minister Rampal Singh (Silwani-Raisen), home and transport minister Bhupendra Singh (Khurai-Sagar), besides parliamentary affairs and public relations minister Narottam Mishra.

While Mishra owns a revolver worth Rs 75,000, the home minister Bhupendra Singh has a 12 bore rifle and a revolver worth Rs 65,000, PWD minister Rampal Singh owns a revolver, rifle and a 12 bore gun worth Rs 1.60 lakh and the agriculture minister Gourishankar Bisen owns a Rs 85,000 worth revolver.  The school education minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, who is the tribal face of the government has a double barrel gun, a rifle and a .375 Magnum gun, all worth Rs 4.5 lakh.

Another Cabinet minister, the minister for new and renewable energy Narayan Singh Kushwah has a 32 bore pistol and a 315 bore Mauser Pistol, both worth Rs 1.45 lakh. Among the ministers of state, the minister for medical education Sharad Jain (Jabalpur North) has a revolver worth Rs 1 lakh, education minister Deepak Joshi has a revolver worth Rs 83,500. Minister for cooperatives and Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief Vishwas Sarang has a licensed revolver worth Rs 3.5 lakh which was gifted to him by someone else.

The list of MoS having guns, includes Ayush, rural and cottage industry minister Jalam Singh Patel with a revolver and farmer welfare and agriculture development minister Balkrishna Patidar who has declared in his affidavit to be owning a 12 bore licensed gun presently worth Rs 10,000.

And it’s not the ministers of the BJP government only who are the prideful owners of guns, but several senior leaders of opposition Congress too seem to be having a penchant for guns in the central Indian state, which is often dubbed as the Shanti Ka Tapu (Island of Peace) by the CM himself.

The list of senior Congress leaders holding guns, include party’s chief whip in the Vidhan Sabha and sitting MLA from Vijaypur seat of Sheopur district Ramniwas Rawat with a revolver, 12 bore gun and Mauser worth Rs 1.5 lakh, former minister KP Singh (Pichhore) who has a revolver and rifle.
