Jhabua/ Meghnagar: With the assembly election fever at its peak, for some, it’s Congress vs BJP or the loyal vs rebel, but here in Jhabua, the situation and the script is a trifle different. It’s a battle between the candidates who not only belong to different parties but are from distinguished professions. One is a doctor while the other is an engineer.

From Jhabua seat, Congress fielded Ratlam MP Kantilal Bhuria’s son Dr Vikrant Bhuria, while BJP announced the candidature of retired engineer Gumansingh Damor as its official candidate. Damor not only holds BE, but LLB as well. With two highly qualified candidates in the fray from the seat which had a literacy rate around 43.3 per cent in 2011 which is less than the average literacy rate of 69.32 per cent of Madhya Pradesh, it’s an interesting contest and will have a huge TRP. Population-wise, out of 352,081 literates, there were 214,582 males and 137,499 females.

Many villagers appreciated both the BJP and  the Congress’s move to field educated candidates from Jhabua as this could help raise the literacy rate and subsequently it will change the face of region.  Rebels could be game changer factor Though, both BJP and Congress are hopeful of wins, rebels from both the parties could be the game changer here. Notably, BJP replaced its sitting MLA Shantilal Bilawal with Damor, while Dr Bhuria got a ticket from Congress party and that hurt local candidate Xavier Meda and his supporters a lot. Xavier and his supporters had anticipated a ticket.

In 2008, Xavier Meda of Congress defeated BJP’s Pavesingh Pargi by a margin of 18,751 votes. In 2013, BJP’s Shantilal Bilwal defeated Congress candidate Xavier Meda of the Congress by margin of 15,858 votes. Both Bilwal and Meda’s supporters opened front against their own party candidates and lodged protests in the village.

Jhabua district literacy rate 43.3%
The total literacy rate of Jhabua district was 43.3 per cent in 2011 which is less than average literacy rate 69.32 per cent of Madhya Pradesh. Population-wise, out of total 352,081 literates, males were 214,582 while females were 137,499.
