Madhya Pradesh Assembly Polls 2018: Daughter, daughter-in-law in fray

Daughter and daughter-in-law of senior leaders are among the candidates fielded by political parties from seven Vidhan Sabha constituencies in Bhopal district. Three women candidates have also been fielded in seven constituencies of the district.

BJP fielded Fatima Rasool Siddiqui against Congress candidates Arif Aqueel. Her father Rasool Ahemed Siddiqui was Congress leader. She was given ticket immediately after joining BJP and quitting Congress. Rasool Ahmed Siddiqui, who was a popular figure in Old City area, was defeated in 1990 by Arif Aqueel. Aqueel was defeated when he contested JD tickets in 1993.

BJP fielded daughter-in-law of ex-CM Babulal Gaur from Govindpura Vidhan Sabha. Krishna Gaur is ex-mayor and daughter-in-law of ex-CM Babulal Gaur. Babulal Gaur represents the seat without losing any election in Govindpura, which include BHEL township. Congress has fielded local corporator Girish Sharma against Krishna Gaur.

Minister Uma Shankar Gupta will face PC Sharma of Congress. For the last three times, Uma Shankar Gupta has been wining the seat with comfortable margin. In 2003, Gupta defeated Sharma and since then they have been pitted against each other in the same constituency. After delimitation, it is first time they are fighting against each other.

Old rivals have been against pitted in assembly polls. BJP has fielded its sitting MLA Surendra Nath Singh while Congress also fielded Arif Masood who had lost previously to Nath. Nath is BJP district president while Masood is a Muslim hardliner leader. He had led mob for attacking a cinema hall screening Gadar film in 2001.

MoS Vishwas Sarang has again been given ticket while Congress has fielded Mahendra Singh Chauhan. It is third time for Sarang from Narela Vidhan Sabha constituency. In last two elections, Sarang defeated ex-mayor and Congress candidate Sunil Sood. Sarang belongs to Kayashta community whose votes are sizeable in state capital. His father Kailash Sarang is a senior BJP leader.

Sitting MLA Rameswar Sharma of BJP will take on Naresh Gyanchandani of Congress. Huzur covers Sindhi dominated Bairagarh and Kolar pockets. Congress eyes Sindhi vote banks by fielding Sindhi community candidate. It was long pending demand of Sindhi community from BJP and Congress to field Sindhi community candidates from Huzur.

Vishnu Khatri

BJP has fielded sitting MLA Vishnu Khatri from reserved constituency. Earlier, he was corporator in Bhopal. He has been RSS staunch supporter and he has advantage of being an SC candidate. Congress fielded Jaishree Harikaran, who is PCC spokesperson. Earlier, she was District Mahila Congress president (rural). Congress raised the issue of women empowerment in reserved constituency by elevating her as state spokesperson.

BJP has given tickets to over 40 such candidates who are either sons, daughters, wives and relatives of former MPs, MLAs or senior party functionaries
