This column will talk about people who have been selected by the authorities to increase the awareness and importance of voting among the electorate.
KP Singh, ex-army man District Sainik Welfare Office Indore |
The ambassadors working under the Systemic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme helped retired army officials in making their voter ID cards. In the year 2018, about 80 ex-servicemen were helped by the ambassadors at the office. They were informed about their right to vote and were sensitised about the importance of voting. Ambassadors made them realise that voting is their duty towards the nation and it is necessary for building a stronger democracy. They were given forms and those who had difficulty in filling those forms were also helped. The voter ID cards were then posted by the authorities at their respective residents.

Voters should not fear their leaders, they should be motivated and inspired by them. So the candidate should not be corrupt and must not hold any criminal or civil case against him. Candidate should be connected to his voters. He should listen to their problems even after getting elected. The candidate should be more realistic, honest and reliable. The candidates’ agendas should support development of the society. Alike cleanliness the candidate should also work for decreasing air and sound pollution. The elected leader should have courage to take even unpopular decisions for development of weaker sections of the society. Some leaders just disappear after the elections and are hardly seen solving problems of the people. Voters must be careful while choosing such candidates.
