BHOPAL: A day after the income tax survey, the five city- based jewellers admitted to committing tax evasion and surrendered a sum of Rs 17crore on Thursday.
I- T department carried out a survey on Alankar Jewellers, Sajawat Jwellers, Johri Sons, Raja and Akash Jewellers and their other units.
I- T sleuths dug up around 2.5- quintal gold and jewellery from these establishments. Also, they came across several discrepancies in their stock registers. The department is contemplating to take further action against these tax evaders.
During the survey, I- T sleuths also hit upon some computer hard disks and took all those documents into their custody to scrutinise the financial transactions made by those jewellers.
Sources said those jewelers were manipulating their I- T returns. Consequently, the survey was conducted. Sources said further investigations would be carried out on the basis of stock of gold recovered from these jewellers.
