Chauhan was kept in the dark about the decision

BHOPAL: The notification issued by school education department regarding the inclusion lessons on ‘ Bhagwat Gita’ in the curriculum of Urdu and English medium in classes 1 to 2 has been cancelled by the state government.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan interacting with journalists here on Friday said the notification has been cancelled in the wake of the controversy over it and said the proposed course was optional and all good things in all religions are being taught in the course.

In the notification issued by school education department on August 1, chapters related to Bhagwat Gita were to be included in course of General Hindi for classes 3 to 8 and courses of Urdu and English of classes 1 and 2.

With the cancellation of the notification, the state government needs to issue a fresh notification for inclusion of Bhagwat Gita in Hindi course of classes 3 to 8. The decision to incorporate Bhagwat Gita in Urdu course and teaching of Geeta in Madarsa had given rise to a dispute as it was being opposed by the Muslim community.

Sources said even Chauhan was not aware of the decision and when came to know about it through media, he issued directions to the concerned officials to cancel the notification. Annoyed over the decision, Chauhan severely reprimanded the officials of school education department in this matter. The decision of school education department had created resentment.

Meanwhile, lessons on Bhagwat Gita in courses of special Hindi in schools in classes 9 to 12 and special English in classes 11 to 12 will continue to be taught as part of their curriculum.
