BHOPAL : In a sudden turn of events the prime accused, in the case of attempted abduction of 21-year-old engineering student in an auto rickshaw near DRM office on Thursday night, surrendered at the District Court on Sunday evening around 5.30 pm. The court handed over the accused to the police and sent him on a police remand for three days.
Earlier six teams of police formed by ASP Rajesh Singh Bhadauria raided around 17 spots, suspected hideouts, of the abductor on Saturday to mount pressure on the accused due to which he took the step.
ASP Rajesh Singh Bhadauria said that the accused was identified as Sharif Khan, 45, son of Yasin Khan, resident of Foota Makbara area. He hails from Raisen where he was a history sheeter and many cases were registered against him there. He shifted to the city around four years ago.
He said that the accused had tampered the number plate of the vehicle, engine number and chassis number which suggests that he was involved in similar crimes earlier also. The facts would be revealed once the accused was taken on remand.
Earlier six teams led by TIs of various police stations have been formed for the investigation of the case and they raided more than 17 spots in the city to nab the accused. The identity of the accused was ascertained after the arrest of one of his close associates. During the raids police created pressure on the kin of the accused due to which he surrendered.
The 21-year-old engineering student hails from Tikamgarh and was currently staying at a hostel in Alkapuri area. On Thursday evening around 7.30 pm she was returning her hostel from MP Nagar area walking and was talking to her friend on mobile. When she reached near DRM office she was abducted by an auto driver.
