BHOPAL : The Barkatullah University authorities have set up a probe into the laying of optical fibre on the campus six years ago, following reports that the work was not done and double payments were made. The university VC Dr MD Tiwari found serious financial misappropriation of fund in the work sanctioned at the time of former VC Dr Nisha Dubey.

Decision was taken to conduct enquiry into the case earlier too but the university officials put it on hold, fearing that it could open a Pandora’s Box.

“It was found that internet is not properly working in campus and it was general complaint from students. Even in IT department, students had complained,” said Hemant Katare, an executive council member.

In 2009, the university had spent Rs 2.25 crore on laying optical fibre from the fund sanctioned in five year plan. Present, VC Dr Tiwari set up an expert committee following information that internet was not working in teaching departments. The committee submitted report saying that the work was ‘bogus’

The matter came up in the last EC meeting for investigation when the university officials sought Rs 1.5 crore more for internet-related work.

Probe into constructions of toilets too

The university had sought Rs one crore for construction of toilets in schools of studies and offices, triggering speculations regarding another case of misappropriation. The Building committee of the university did not sanction the amount and sought third party investigation into the works sanctioned earlier.

“The committee has asked Bhopal Municipal Corporation commissioner to depute an engineer for investigation into toilet constructions in BU,” said Amit Sharma, EC member and a Congress corporator.
