BHOPAL: The post offices in the city are exchanging old currency notes but surprisingly, most of them are not equipped with machines for checking the genuineness of the notes. Most even don’t have currency counting machines. This, theoretically, means that even fake Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes can be exchanged for genuine ones in POs.
Talking to Free Press Journal, A. R. Deshmukh, Assistant Director, Savings Banks said, “Some machines were sent but I don’t know where to. You can ask the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices of the Bhopal division. There are 8000 post offices in MP so it is not possible for me to provide exact figures to you”
“Yes, we have three machines to check notes but no currency counting machine. Out of the three, we are using one for detecting fake notes. But we do it later, not at the time of exchanging. And the other two machines are kept in the treasury,” said R.K. Jaiswal, senior post master of GPO, Royal Market.
Similarly, Ratna Dixit, postmaster of C.T.T. Nagar post office said, “Yes, we have one machine for counting notes but we don’t have machine to check the authenticity of notes during exchanging. We check it manually.” “We don’t have any kind of machine, neither for counting nor for checking notes. Yes, problem to hai but what to do,” said post master of Arera Hills post office.
