CM writes to FM, RBI governor, Mallaiya confirms
BHOPAL: Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in the wake of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) putting a ban on cooperative banks exchanging and depositing old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 100o, has written to union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and RBI governor Urjit Patel to lift the ban and give permission to cooperative banks.
A large number of farmers from across the state only have bank accounts in cooperative banks. With RBI ban, they are in a fix as they are not able to exchange and deposit old notes. Chouhan, citing the inconvenience of the farmers, has sought lifting of the ban. Chouhan also cited the circulars issued by the RBI on November 8 and 15. Finance minister Jayant Mallaiya has confirmed that the CM had written to the Finance Minister and RBI Governor. He said as many as 53 lakh farmers are facing problems in depositing money following the decision of the RBI. Meanwhile, CM Secretariat told that CM has not sent the said letter and finance minister might have given the information after seeing the draft of the letter.
Demand to reduce minimum amount for RTGS
State’s chief secretary BP Singh, in a videoconferencing with cabinet secretary, said that currently a minimum sum of Rs 2 lakh could be sent through RTGS in the accounts of farmers. Singh demanded that the limit of minimum amount should be reduced to Rs 50,000 so that small farmers can be paid through RTGS and they could also withdraw money from their accounts. During video conferencing, other states too demanded to allow cooperative banks to exchange and deposit old notes.
