Bhopal: Congress MLA N P Prajapati was on Tuesday elected Speaker of the 15th Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly but not after trading of bards between the ruling party and the Opposition. The BJP staged a walk out following commotion during voting. Prajapati got 120 votes. No vote was cast in opposition owing to BJP’s boycott.

Thus, pro-tem speaker Deepak Saxena did not have to vote. At the start of the speaker’s election, pro-tem speaker read out four proposals for Prajapati’s candidature but skipped proposal of BJP’s Vijay Shah. Taking affront, Leader of Opposition Gopal Bhargava questioned Saxena’s decision of not reading BJP’s proposal. All BJP members rose in the House and entered into the Well of the House, forcing pro-tem to adjourn the House twice.

Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accused Congress of murdering democracy and termed the incident as a ‘black day’. He said that BJP candidate was prevented from entering into the fray Following BJP’s boycott, legislative affairs minister Govind Singh asked the pro-tem speaker to accept BJP’s demand and include proposal for Shah for voting.

BSP MLA Sanjiv Kushwaha demanded vote division, which allowed the Congress to showcase its might. Chief Minister Kamal Nath said that BJP resorted to ruckus as it lacked majority. He added that he had not seen such a conduct on the first of the MP Assembly in the past
