Says selling the vegetable for a cheaper rate of Rs 4 per kg would ultimately cause losses to farmers
BHOPAL : Congress MLA Jaivardhan Singh, speaking on a call attention motion in the House on Tuesday, raised the issue of the state government not making payment of onions bought from the farmers. The Congress, dissatisfied with the reply of cooperatives minister Vishwas Sarang, staged a walkout.
Singh asked Sarang as to when would the farmers be given the remaining payment for the onions procured from them.
He also sought information about the quantity of onions that have rotten. Sarang assured that the farmers would be given remaining payment within a week.
MLA Ramnivas Rawat said the government was selling onions at the rate of Rs 4 per kilogram and that would ultimately cause loss to the farmers.
He said currently, onions are being sold at the rate of Rs 9 per kilogram and selling onions at cheaper price would adversely affect the farmers.
Sarang said the arrangement had earlier benefited the farmers and now it is being extended to the consumers.
Sarang said it was a big decision of the government to sell onions at lower prices but it could not satisfy the Congress MLAs.
