BHOPAL : The proposed controversial meeting of the general council of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communication was postponed again by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, putting in limbo the decision on extension of vice chancellor BK Kuthiyala’s tenure and approval to several appointments made before the Assembly elections.
This is the second time in the last six months when chief minister postponed the meeting that was scheduled to take a decision on the continuation of vice chancellor and take a decision on other key issues. The varsity administration, in the message to general council members, quoted ‘unavoidable circumstances’ as the reason for the postponement.
The decision was taken following leader of opposition Satyadev Katare’s objection to the holding of the meeting on the ground that the agenda was not provided to the members within the stipulated time frame. Katare, who is an ex-officio member of the general council, wrote to the chief minister and general council chairman Chauhan, complaining that he was not given the agenda of the meeting within the stipulated time. “Section 19 (6) of the University Act makes it mandatory to provide copies of agenda to members seven days before the meeting,” he said.
In the absence of the agenda, the members could not have studied the issues to be discussed and the meeting would have been only a formality, he said demanding postponement of the meeting. The meeting would have either given extension to present vice chancellor Kuthiyala or formed search panel for appointment of a new vice chancellor. Kuthiyala’s tenure has already expired but the chief minister Chauhan had extended it by issuing an order.
