Bhopal : The union government has put on hold maintenance fund for national highways given to state public works department (PWD) despite the latter submitting estimates, said public works department minister Nagendra Singh.

Singh who recently met union surface transport and highway minister CP Joshi during his visit to Bhopal put the issue before the Minister and urged for maintenance fund. “The PWD was asked to maintain national highways – around 2000 km – by the union government with a provision to provide annual maintenance fund. The state government submitted proposal for maintenance along with issuing tenders but no sanction was given by the union ministry,” Nagendra Singh said.

Proposals to the tune of Rs 250 crores were sent to the union ministry. Singh said, some stretches of national highways are in a poor condition and  need repairs immediately. The union minister has given assurance to provide funds.
