BHOPAL : The raids conducted by the CBI in Vyapam scam on Thursday have created a sensation. The Special Task Force (STF), during its two-year probe into the scam, did not bother to raid the houses of the accused and they got a chance to tamper with the documents.

CBI, in its initial stage of investigations, has recovered documents in the raids which were not seized by the STF. However, several high-profile persons have been spared by the CBI.

The CBI did not raid the houses of Amit Pandey, husband of retired IAS officer Ajita Vajpayee Pandey, BJP leader Dr Ajay Shankar Mehta, who was very close to main accused Nitin Mahindra, Premprasad, ex-PA to CM and Gulab Singh Kirar, ex-member of MP Backward Classes Commission. All of them had a role in Vyapam scam.

Sources in CBI maintain that raids would continue in the coming time and the houses of other suspects may be raided. CBI during its raids searched the houses and also quizzed the relatives of the accused.

These relatives were asked what they know about the scam and the money the accused had amassed.

CBI also sought information on investments made by the accused. Sources in CBI said that noose may tighten on other people too after scrutinising the documents recovered.

Officers of I-T, Central Excise, Banks were in raid teams

CBI also included officers of Income Tax Department, Central Excise Department and Banks in its teams conducting raids. A back up team was also called from Delhi for raids. To conduct raids, more than 100 vehicles were commandeered. With all the vehicles reaching the Char Imli office of the agency, the talk of a big action was in the air since morning.

What would be found after 2 years, ask some

The raids conducted by CBI at 40 places became a topic of discussion in political and administrative circles. People doubted that after a long gap of two years, CBI would be able to recover something concrete in its raids on the houses of the accused. CBI has to submit a status report in the Supreme Court on October 9 and the raids, it is said, had much to do with this. Sources said CBI conducted raids as it has been provided certain important evidence by the STF. The raids were conducted to collect more information. In the cases filed by STF, the money trail was not explored properly and that would have weakened the case. CBI is zeroing on in establishing that money changed hands in the scam.
