BHOPAL : Despite enjoying a thumping majority in the House, the ruling BJP was forced to defer the decision on DPR for a Rs-1600 crore project for construction of drains in the general council meeting of the BMC on Thursday.

Mayor-in-Council (MiC) had recently okayed two proposals-preparation of DPR of Rs 1600cr project for construction and repair of drains in the city and secondly privatisation of street lighting system of the city. These two proposals, with a supplementary one on road construction in Bhauri, were tabled in the House.

Chairman Surjit Singh Chauhan said, “The decision on Detailed Project Report of Rs 1,600 crore for construction of drains in Bhopal has been deferred as it has to cover the entire Bhopal. We will have to wait for incorporation of Kolar area and 20 villages in it. Now MiC will revise the proposal related to DPR and then it will be taken up for discussion”.

Chauhan said, “Regarding privatisation of street light, we have decided to clear it only after incorporating the report of study team to be sent to Bhubneshwar”.

An eight-member team consisting of chairman Surjit Singh Chauhan (BJP), Girish Sharma (Cong), Shafiq (Cong), Raisa Bi (Cong), Mahesh Makwana (BJP), Kewal Mishra (BJP), Sunil (BJP) and Tulsa Verma (BJP) will be visiting Bunvneshwar.

Opposing drain proposal, Congress Corporator Safiq said, “Modi Government is unlikely to clear the Rs-1600 cr proposal but the BMC will have to pay consultancy of over Rs 16 crore at rate of 1.1 per cent. So it is not wise decision to pay consultant M/S Manhunt consultant without the clearance of DPR.”

Congress Corporator Girish Sharma said, “UPA had sanctioned the proposal of Mahakal of Rs 60.69 crore for Simhastha and Rs303 crore for sewage on February 5,2014, DPR of Rs 27 crore of cable bridge of Kamla Park, Rs 97 crore of Indore Municipal Corporation, Rs 8.5 crore of Madan Mahal Station in Jabalpur. But when NDA came into power, all the sanctioned proposals were cancelled. Under such circumstance, it is not wise full to pay Rs 16 crore before approval of DPR of Rs 1600 for the drains.”
