Bhopal: Year 2018 saw 528 female homicides

Bhopal: While it has a shameful track record in rape cases, the Madhya Pradesh also witnessed a number of women being killed in cold blood. Statistics say the year 2018 saw 528 women physically assaulted and murdered, while as many as 1858 vulnerable women faced attempt to murder in state.

In four years – 2014 to 2018, of 8194 people killed in state 2271 were women – around 28 per cent of the total killings in the state. This period also saw 2648 women committing suicide over various reason including domestic violence, harassment, dowry, family feud and hostilities. In the same period, 39,254 women were physically assaulted with sharp-edged weapons.  In the last five years 39,057 girls including women were subjected to face demand or request for sexual favours or, they were re forced to see pornography against their will or were made face sexually coloured remarks.

The cruelty by husband and relatives though has dropped, however, in last five years 27,955 women were physically tortured by husband and in-laws. During this period, 3184 daughter-in-laws were killed for dowry. The above figures though are alarming, however, there is a small respite that cases of eve teasing dropped year by year during this period. In last five years (2014-18), 1631 cases of eve teasing were registered.

Dial-100 is the first agency which receives the information seeking help from the police. SP Dial-100 Amit Saxena informed that every day the control room receives call seeking help and also sharing information about the crimes. Around 54,114 victims of eve teasing had called up the control room and the FRV had addressed their issue.
