Bhopal: A four-day workshop on self-defence concluded at Bhopal School of Social Science (BSSS) on Friday. Beginning August 1, the workshop was organised by physical education department of BSSS in collaboration with women cell to make girls self-reliant.
The workshop was meant exclusively for girls, where, 85 participants received hands-on training and learnt various techniques of self defence, prominent ones being hand blade neck strike, finger thrust on face, front kick from ankle, knee kick on growing and outer thigh, basic punch and wrist lock. Sunil Mishra, a taekwondo expert and an alumnus of BSSS trained students in the workshop.
Ruchi Vardhan Mishra, IAS, commandant 7th Battalion, PHQ, Bhopal was chief guest. She emphasised the need of self- discipline to pave way for success. Also, she stressed managing life in a healthy manner which includes due importance to food, exercise, nutrition and meditation. She advised the girls to use mobiles cautiously and try to extract only useful things from social media. She congratulated the participants and handed over certificates to each.
Fr John PJ, principal, BSSS threw light on the contemporary relevance and effectiveness of such training workshops. He further said that self defence, irrespective of gender, has been a part and parcel of our cultural heritage since times immemorial. This workshop is just a beginning to many such fruitful endeavours which the college would undertake in future.
Naina Singh coordinated the workshop. Vishal Singh Sengar, head of department of physical education said, “In modern world, girls are on par with boys in every field and they should understand the importance of self defense, learn ways and lead their lives confidently.”
