Bhopal: Ex-CM Digvijaya Singh has advised historians to work on exact birth year of Adi Shankaracharya as it is still disputed. He was speaking at inaugural session of 79th Indian History Congress (IHC) at RCVP Academy of Administration on Tuesday.
Singh said that the place where Adi Shankaracharya took Diksha too is disputed. It needs to be authenticated with research whether he took diksha at Omkareshwar or in Narsinghpur. Singh requested chief secretary SR Mohanty to set up a team of historians to collect evidence and facts bring about history of Madhya Pradesh in right perspective.
“It is unfortunate that some forces are trying to rewrite history as per their own ideology which is contradictory against basic idea of history,” said Singh. He said that a lot of work needs to be done in MP specially in reference to Ujjain, Raja Bhoj, Stupas in Vindhya region and Narmada valley civilisation.
Secretary of IHC Mahalakshmi and Digvijaya Singh slammed at forces trying to rewrite history and stalling IHC’s effort. Thanking MP government, Mahalakshmi said Savitribai Phule University, Pune broke its commitment and cancelled IHC programme at the last moment citing lack of funds. But the contradictory statements that were made later, suggested otherwise, she said.
Digvijaya Singh, in his address, too echoed the same sentiments and said that IHC conference at Pune was cancelled on a very flimsy ground. Even in 2001 same situation had developed and the conference was organised in Bhopal. We will not allow history to be written on parochial lines.
Higher education minister Jitu Patwari, Prof Irfan Habib, CS SR Mohanty, Prof KM Shrimali were also present at the expo. Prof Irfan Habib was anointed as president in-charge till next president is elected.
