Bhopal: The family of 25-year-old woman, who allegedly had set herself on fire and died, has alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws for dowry and bearing girl child. Unable to torture anymore, the woman Ayushi Sahoo had set herself ablaze, she succumbed to burns on February 14.
City superintendent of police (CSP) Kotwali Suresh Damle said that woman was tortured for dowry and for that we have filed an FIR under 498 A, 304 B ¾ dowry prohibition Act. The woman’s in-laws and her husband are on the run. Ayushi, a resident of Mangalwara had married Rahul, a resident of Khatikpura in 2017.
The family alleged that Ayushi’s in-laws and husband used to harass her for dowry and later when she gave birth to a girl child their torture grew. The woman was admitted to Hamidia hospital for burn injuries on 10 February and four days later she succumbed to burns.
Ayushi’s family had lodged a complaint with police alleging that she was tortured for dowry. During investigation police established that woman had committed suicide by setting herself on fire.
While admitting her to hospital, her in-laws had told doctors that she had sustained burns while working in the house. Police found out her in-laws had started torturing her soon after her marriage in 2017 and their suffering multiplied after she gave birth to a girl in January this year.
