Bhopal: Van Vihar is all set to bring a pair of lions from Gujarat to help breeding here and for the first time, the big cats will be kept together for the purpsoe. At present, Van Vihar has four beasts –three lions and one lioness. However, these male beats are over 14 years of age and the Van Vihar management is unwilling to let them to mate with the lone female.  These animals are also kept in separate areas in Van Vihar, so breeding is not possible among these animals. Now, the zoo management is planning to bring couple of lions from Gujarat for breeding purpose.

The pure breed of lions will be allowed to mate with the only female here and the cubs will be distributed to other national parks. The Van Vihar management had sought permission for the same from National Zoo Authority (NZA) and after getting its nod, the management is all set to bring the lions from Gujarat.  The Van Vihar officials say lions here now are 14, 15 and 19 years of age and their breeding will not yield positive result. On the top of that these lions are hybrid ones and we want pure breed in our national parks. “We will bring lions from Gujarat to Bhopal and after their breeding, the cubs will be sent to other national parks, says one zoo official.
