Bhopal: Muslim leaders believe that the Supreme Court’s ban on instant triple talaq would pave the way for Uniform Civil Code. However, they also believe that such a code would be difficult to implement as the country was home to different communities. The leaders have come to city to attend first executive body meeting of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) after apex court’s ruling on triple talaq.
Their ire was directed at the apex court for meddling in their religious matter. “When other communities are not disturbed, why are Muslims being singled out through suo-motto cognizance,” they asked. The meeting on Sunday was attended by MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Uzma Naheed. Firebrand Owaisi, however, desisted from speaking on Supreme Cour order, triple talaq and Babri Masjid.
Most of the executive members condemned the SC order calling it direct interference into rights guaranteed under the Constitution. However, a few members backed the ruling stating that it would end abuse of triple talaq practice. However, none of them spoke openly. Even Usma Naheed said that the AIMPLB would not file any review petition against the ruling.
Dr Maulana Yashmin Usmani said, “Rights of Muslims given by Constitution should not be disturbed. Most of the leaders advocated this line during meeting. No one was against the Supreme Court. However, members are apprehensive of the Central government and believe that it will pave way for Common Civil Code which is not possible in the country like India where people different communities live. Question arises when other communities are not disturbed, why Muslims are being disturbed or attacked with such suo-motto cognizance.”
Even Shahar Qazis of different cities said that they would work as per AIMPLB guidelines.
