Hoshangabad: The students, under the aegis of Government Home Science Post Graduate College, Hoshangabad, in collaboration with Madhya Pradesh Council for Science and Technology (MAPCOST), were imparted training in solid waste management. The team members including principal Dr Kamini Jain, agriculture scientist Dr S K Tiwari, Dr Sandhya Murey, nutritionist Dr Reena Malviya, Preeti Thakur, Dr Rashmi Shrivastava, Dr Nitu Khan and students, visited various firms. They visited Savaria Herbal Farm, Misrod, Vision for Nature Energy, Agriculture and Sustainability (NEAS Vision), Anchalkheda and Jai Maa Durgey Vermicompost Unit, Babai, to know about solid waste management.
Madanmohan Patidar from Misrod said that vermicompost is helping in increasing the agricultural production. It is supplied to far-off states including Assam and there is a considerable demand for it. Nilesh Yadav of NEAS Vision, Anchalkheda, said the demand for vermicompost has risen due to growing popularity of organic farming. Suresh Agarwal and Anil Agarwal of the same firm said that vermicompost is being made using garbage and weeds. They said that vermicompost could be a source of income, besides helping in keeping the environment clean and maintaining soil composition. Nathuram Verma, director, Jai Maa Durge Vermicompost threw light on the mode of production of vermicompost. He said an earthworm of a specific species, known as Icinia Foetida helps in quick making of vermicompost.
Project in-charge Dr Kamini Jain said that solid waste management is a big problem and waste lying on the banks of Narmada river is a testimony to the growing extent of the problem. She said the girl students will be taught the techniques for converting domestic waste and kitchen waste into manure. Manufacturing plants would also be set up on the college premises.’
