44th Chess Olympiad torch reaches Gwalior

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Union Minister of Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar has said that sports are not just for entertainment, they teach us the culture of discipline along with providing physical and intellectual exercise.

He was speaking in an event at Gwalior to mark the arrival of the torch relay of 44th Chess Olympiad in the city on Tuesday. Tomar received the torch at LNIPE.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Torch Relay on June 19 with the aim of promoting the game of chess. It is a matter of happiness and pride for Madhya Pradesh that the Chess Olympiad torch has reached Gwalior after visiting major places including Ujjain, Indore, Bhopal and Sanchi.

He said that it is a matter of pleasure that India is getting the opportunity to host the Chess Olympiad for the first time. In the Olympiad, more than two thousand players from about 187 countries will display their skills.

President of Chess Association ad hoc committee Gurmeet Singh said that the purpose of Chess Olympiad Torch Relay is to promote the game. The Torch Rally is a gift to India. Never before has such a rally taken place in the Chess Olympiad. The rally will originate from India itself in the Olympiad to be held in the future.

Tomar handed over the Chess Olympiad torch to 16-year-old chess player Ojasva Singh from Gwalior. He will take the torch from LNIPE and visit Gwalior Fort and major places. The Olympiad is going to be held in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu from July 28 to August 10.
