Bhopal: The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared its DPR for clearing waste at trenching ground in Bhanpur area and earmarked a budget of Rs 39.8 crore for the same. However, several shortcomings in the DPR has come to fore. Despite having a huge sum allotted for taking up the project, the civic authorities are likely to adopt outdated technique like bio-mining process, instead of going for better process like bio-radiation for waste clearance.

What is making authorities to go for such low-cost and outmoded technique even when sufficient funds are available is beyond understanding of many. The bio-mining process for waste disposal is not only far more inferior to other available techniques but will also have ill effects once the process completes.

The system will only separates different elements at different levels, while techniques like bio-radiation is better equipped to save from the ill effects including checking harmful rays and others. The corporation has also to take note that the method they deploy should clear the harmful gases oozing at the dumping ground for years.

For years the residents living in the area around the trenching ground are exposed to various gasses and fumes emanating from the waste. The waste decomposition for years have also contaminated the ground water and is considered to be one of the major reason for the health issues the people have been facing here.

Waste classification and removal has been focus areas, however the authorities need to take into notice the contamination of water bodies and the groundwater and adopt a method best suited to check it. The BMC has only done formality in checking the level of water pollution at the site, alleged an environmentalist Subhash C Pandey. Water is getting contaminated at various levels but the civic body is least bothered, he added.

Stating that gases emitting from the site waste removal process can be used for various purposes but the civic body has not included any points in the DPR for this process. Meanwhile, Mayor Alok Sharma when contacted said that the points were brought to my notice and I have ordered the team to look into it. In case we find any other suggestion useful for the project, we will include it.
