Bhopal: Pradesh Congress Committee office here witnessed heavy celebration after Kamal Nath was appointed as state Congress president and Jyotiraditya Scindia as campaign committee chief on Thursday. Ahead of the Assembly elections in the state scheduled in November or December, the new appointments, including the selection of Surendra Choudhary, Jeetu Patwari, Ram Niwas Rawat and Bala Bacchan as working presidents, gave a fresh hope to the faction-ridden party, as among all the top Congress leaders of the state, especially Nath’s stature was very high and he has the capacity to take along all of them.

Following the much-anticipated rejig, jubilant supporters especially of Kamal Nath and Scindia distributed sweets and burst crackers to express their happiness. State youth Congress president Kunal Choudhary, said to be a diehard supporter of Jeetu Patwari, was seen beating drums at the PCC office while there were many who danced to the band party numbers with huge cut outs of their leaders.

MP Congress’ chief spokesman KK Mishra exuded confidence that the new leadership will certainly help the party work “unitedly” to form a government in the state. Former Union minister Aslam Sher Khan also welcomed the change in state unit leadership “though it came late.”

“Farmers are very annoyed with the BJP government as they are not getting due for their produce. This change will give necessary vigour to the Congress to take on the BJP, whose graph, and especially that of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is falling at a fast pace in the state,” claimed Khan, the ex-Olympian who had been demanding Nath’s appointment as the state party president for long. Patwari said Nath’s experience will play a major role in ending the “BJP’s misrule” in the state, while Bala Bachchan believed “Under Nath’s leadership, the people, who are fed up with the BJP, will get the much needed relief.”

Soon after his appointment, Nath assured to work with full dedication to defeat the “non-secular parties”. “I am committed to give my best to ensure the defeat of non-secular parties. As president, I will work dedicatedly and with full coordination to defeat the BJP and I thank Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for reposing faith in me,” Nath said in a tweet.
