BHOPAL: A 27-year-old woman lost her leg after allegedly thrown off a running train by robbers near Itarsi. The incident happened on April 7, but came to light on Saturday after some staff members of Hamidia Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment, informed media persons.

According to sources, identified Guneshwari Singh, wife of CRPF constable Rai Singh posted in Delhi, she was aboard 12807, Samta Express bound for Delhi. Her brother and 13-month-old daughter were also with her. On April 7, she was asleep on her berth when at about 5 am, she found a man trying to snatch away her bag.

Guneshwari chased the man till the door where the unknown accused along with his accomplice entered into a brawl with her in an attempt to escape with the bag. She refused to let away her bag during which suddenly they pushed her out of the running train and she fell on the tracks. One of the passengers sleeping near the door, got alerted after the incident and informed the railway police which took her to the government hospital in Itarsi. The doctors later referred her to Hamidia Hospital here where the doctors amputated one of her injured legs to prevent the infection from spreading in the body. “Rai Singh came down to Bhopal a few days ago and is looking after Guneshwari in the hospital,” added sources.

One of her relatives who didn’t wish to be named told Free Press that she was in a stable condition. “She is taking medicines given by the doctors. Her condition is improving slowly with the treatment given to her. We have already lodged a complaint against the unknown accused who the police said would soon be nabbed,” said the relative. Free Press tried to contact the station house officer of government railway police (GRP) in Itarsi, but he didn’t respond.
