Bhopal: Umakant Umrao, commissioner of Narmadapuram Division is visiting different areas in the riparian zone of Narmada under the campaign to restore the holy river, which is considered the state’s lifeline, to its former glory. On Saturday, the commissioner, accompanied by Santosh Verma, deputy commissioner, revenue, reached Babvri and Dimavar villages of Seoni Malwa development block.

He convened a meeting of the local residents where he said the water of Ma Narmada was getting more and more polluted with each passing day and the water flow was declining. He said till 50-60 years back, Narmada flowed in a green corridor with trees, grasses, shrubs and climbers lining both its banks. That ensured that the river remained clean and its flow remained unhindered. He administered an oath to the villagers to work for the preservation of the river and plant trees on both its banks. He said places had been identified for plantation at a distance of 1 km in the 120-km portion of the river that flowed through the district. These spots have been allotted to ‘Narmada Parivars’. Each Narmada Parivar has 20-25 members.

Around 2,500 Narmada Parivars were constituted in Hoshangabad and around 450 in Harda district. Besides, social organisations and associations and organisations of labourers, government officers, employees, media persons, and members of Gram Raksha Samitis and people’s representatives will also join the campaign.

The commissioner said on June 4, the seeds would be chemically treated and the pits dug up for plantation would also be treated. On July 2, a massive plantation programme would be conducted.

He said trees and plants would help protect the eco-system of the riparian zone, besides controlling soil erosion. The trees would absorb the harmful chemicals and not allow them to mix into the river water.

He said Arjun, Chilbil, Jamun, Babul, Baheda, Khirni, Palash, Pipal, Goolar, Bargad, Kathal, Chironji, Saja, Tendu, Neem, Sitaphal, Kattha, Aawnla, Harra and other similar saplings should be planted. In no case, Gajar Ghas should be planted as it is harmful to environment.
