BHOPAL: People are buying only grocery from the markets. Demonetisation has come as a calamity for traders.
Customers as well as shopkeepers are trying to save notes of Rs 100 denomination. This is the reason the market has not normalised. Jeweller shops opened on Monday and people did visit the Chowk Bazar but hardly any customer approached for purchasing ornaments despite marriage season.
The people did window shopping.
With currency of denomination Rs 2000, people cannot purchase any item as shop keepers are not in position to return the remaining money as he is not having currency of Rs 500 or Rs 1000.
This is reason, despite the marriage season, market still is plagued with bearish trend and it will continue to be so till Rs 500 notes are infused into the market in sufficient numbers. Mukesh Goel, jeweler, said, “Currencies crisis has paralysed the market. Bearish trend will continue till currencies are circulated in the market. People are busy in marriage. Somehow they are managing the show. Shopkeepers are opening the shops but it will take to bring normalcy back. It is totally currency crisis.”
New Market Businessmen’s Association president Satish Gangrade said, “Demonetisation is just like shock and calamity for the people who are only concentrating on managing stock of grocery for the family instead of focusing on other items. It is just like ‘calamity’ for them. They are gradually getting rid of it. Secondly, people do not have trust on fresh currencies as union government is talking about benami properties so people are not mentally prepare to manage the things. Common man has little money. Big shots can manage the show in any condition.”
