Bhopal: Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Sunday said that while late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru lacked capability to ensure independence of the country, Mahatma Gandhi was not capable of becoming prime minister of independent India. He was speaking at MP Youth Conclave organised by Yuva Sansad here on Sunday.
Explaining his somewhat controversial statement, the Congress leader said that Mahatma Gandhi’s qualities were exceptional. He was a mass leader whose innovative agitation of Satyagrah became an instant hit among public. However, as prime minister his ideology may not have suited the newly-born nation. On another hand, Jawaharlal Nehru had the capability to lead a newly-born country on the path of development. However, he lacked the quality to make the entire nation follow him.
Senior Congress leader and former foreign minister Salman Khurshid said that diversity was nation’s real strength. “Unity in diversity of the country has no parallel in the world.” Dr Rakesh Pathak stressed that governments, including pre-independence and independence, have always tried to suppress the voice of media. But in the Constitution no one can suppress the voice. “The governments have tried to suppress the voice of media during emergency and presently invisible-emergency, but they are able to control it, the social media is also one of the strong media and the governments are trying to put control over it,” he added.
