Online business has hit hard the sales at brick and mortal outlets and malls ahead of Diwali, the peak spending season in the country. Footfall in city’s retail stores and showrooms have declined tremendously, the electronic and apparels retailers are the worst hit. Shopkeepers and businessmen wait entire year for Diwali as companies come up with attractive offers and deals; however, e-commerce companies have eaten a large share of their business.

The trend of buying electronic items and gadgets from physical shops is on a fall. People are spending lakhs buying goods from e-commerce giants. The shopkeepers here said that there is no such ‘Diwali-sale’ this year as people are shifting to on-line shopping. Some retailers told Free Press that they expecting good sale this Diwali had invested a huge amount but there are no takers of their goods and thus they will have to face huge losses.

The shopkeepers rued that the though companies offers good discounts on Diwali but still they give better deal on on-line shopping. Holding companies responsible for the losses they are facing, the shopkeepers said that it was unfair on their part for patronizing the e-commerce companies. Excerpts;

It’s said that if you want to know how the economy is doing, look at how many people are carrying shopping bags. But this phrase may not hold any ground today as on-line shopping websites have made a negative impact on the retailers. There is no backhand support to the retailers by the company.

Earlier we used to decorate Jyoti Complex to welcome the customers but this year there is no crowd in the market as it used to be during Diwali season. Though there are offers given by the companies but people are not coming to shops and are rather shopping on-line. We used to sell 15-20 mobile phones during Diwali season but today people barely come and purchase mobiles and other electronic items from retail shops.

The company has posed strict rules upon the retailers. We cannot sell the product below the MOP (Market Operating Price) even if there is no sale. Mostly customers coming to shops are those who want to finance the product. This year we might have to face loss.

Sudhir Richhariya,Sony Centre
The Diwali-sale has almost decreased by 90 % as compared to earlier years. It is obvious that people will go to on-line shopping websites as more discounts are given on the same product. Though we get complains that fake products are been sold on-line but I don’t know why still people purchase if the on-line websites are not credible.
